Zohran Mamdani Pledges a 'Dawn' for The Big Apple in First Speech
In a first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reimagine” America's largest city, promising “a new era” and an audacious commencement to his term.
An Unprecedented Figure
The 34-year-old figure, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.
“A time such as this comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the people themselves whose grasp the controls for transformation,” Mamdani stated.
Rejecting advice to temper hopes, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will rule with courage and vision.”
Adhering to Democratic Socialist Ideals
Mamdani explicitly affirmed his core beliefs. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not compromise my principles for concern of being called radical,” he proclaimed to loud cheers.
The inauguration was a dual event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a former subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's rise as a victory over political establishments.
A Sweeping Policy Agenda
Mamdani now begins one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a platform featuring:
- Subsidized daycare
- Fare-free public buses
- A halt to rent increases for nearly 1 million households
- A pilot of city-run grocery stores
The projected $10 billion expense of these initiatives may be challenging to finance. Mamdani has vowed to raise taxes on the richest residents and big business. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Managing Political Challenges
The new mayor must contend with apprehension from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past stances regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a appointments director resigned over offensive past tweets.
Mamdani has attempted to address these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the optics of losing a top Jewish official.
On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was reportedly unexpectedly friendly.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a unusual warning about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani concluded his remarks with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
